The Myakka River Basin - Myakka Island
Myakka Island, so named because of its outstanding appearance from satellite photograpgy, contains 65,000 acres of largely undeveloped and relatively undisturbed native habitat in the middle of burgeoning southwest Florida. Much of the land in Myakka Island is owned by the state and local government (Myakka River State Park, Carlton Reserve and Pinelands Reserve) and committed to conservation, while some is in private ownership, principally large cattle ranches. These private landowners have voluntarily conserved the natural values of their land.
The opportunity, and principal goal of The Myakka Conservancy, is to encourage and facilitate conservation of Myakka Island and other key parts of the basin through a combination of Public acquisition, conservation easements, and private stewardship.
